6 Steps to Create Multi-Purpose Spaces
Apr 18, 2023In the world of Libraries, it is no surprise to you that multi-purpose spaces are highly coveted. In fact, multi-purpose spaces are becoming more and more necessary in lots of commercial buildings, not just Libraries. But being able to produce an element of flexibility in your Library can make all the difference in the world. But knowing how to get started is often the hardest part.
So I've put together a brief list of steps you can take to get you on the right path to exploring the possibilities of creating a multi-purpose space in your own Library.

But before I get started, I want to give you a few examples of multi-purpose spaces I've seen so you can consider what your options might be.
MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM IDEAS
- Meeting Rooms that can be transformed into a lecture-type space with all chairs, tables and chairs for training purposes, banquet-style tables for meals and activities.
- Children's spaces that can be reconfigured to suit a multitude of programs you may have planned.
- Technology rooms that can offer anything from 3D printing, video recording services, social media components to tutorial-style classrooms. There's SO much you can do to make this space more multi-purpose!
- Adult areas that allow for reading nooks all while being able to rearrange for small book club meetings or study areas.
- Study rooms that can be used for tutoring sessions and study but also for smaller recording rooms for social media and small businesses.
- Support spaces that can be used for book sale organizing, temporary storage and really anything that is back-of-house that you just need layout space for.
And of course there are plenty more options out there; as many as your imagination can dream up. So now let's look at some basic steps and things to consider when creating one of these new spaces:
#1 - CHECK WITH YOUR PATRONS
Most of the time, you already know what you need internally to make your Library run more smoothly. But patron needs can dictate a space and what it's used for quicker than anything else. Just make sure your patrons are communicating with you. If they're not expressing their spatial desires or needs, then try setting up a quick survey or just ask them when they come up to check out their books. Communication is key. So start talking to them!
#2 - ASSESS THE SPACES YOU HAVE
This is where you begin analyzing any unused or underused spaces that you can allocate to a multi-purpose space. Look for spaces that aren't being used efficiently or spaces that already have a couple of uses that could be designed more effectively to combine those uses along with others that make sense for that area. Just walk around your building with fresh eyes and consider the space you need to create while you explore.
#3 - CREATE FLEXIBLE FURNITURE GROUPINGS
Stick with modular types of furnishings that are lightweight so you can move them around and rearrange quickly for a fast set up to transform into the new need. Also consider lockable casters on any tables, technology units, smaller shelves and even chairs to help make your space more flexible.
#4 - INVEST IN TECHNOLOGY
Technology can be a great way to create fully functional multi-purpose spaces. Mobile video monitors are a good addition; especially for children's programs. And my favorite tech additions are mobile charging/power units. These are sleek little wheel-enhanced pieces of equipment that can be moved around the building to work wherever you might need them. So then you don't have to worry about full pieces of furniture that might not have those attributes. Very quick and easy to add.
#5 - DON'T FORGET TO CONSIDER SOUND CONTROL
With multi-purpose spaces, comes sound issues. You can always add mobile sound panels that are also aesthetically pleasing that will add visual interest as well as sound control to the space. Fabric screens and white noise machines are other options for controlling sound.
#6 - KEEP YOUR LIGHTING IN MIND
Lighting is the holy grail of any space, so make sure you're considering what lighting is available to you in the area you select for your multi-purpose space and then decide if there's an opportunity to add more. This will of course be a space-by-space evaluation, but think about incorporating as much natural light in the space you choose and perhaps even adding lamps depending on the particular use of that space. If you have the luxury of adding or changing out a little overhead lighting in that area, go for it! The additional light fixtures can even be used to help create a more individual space that is more easily identifiable to your patrons.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Multi-purpose spaces can be a huge benefit to your Library. So if you have a need for one and you can pull it together, then I highly recommend them. That being said, if it doesn't work for your space, make sure you don't create one just for the sake of doing so. This may only cause more disruption and inefficiency than is functional. So evaluate your Library, review the steps above and use your imagination!
