Chicago Library Costs $1,377.78/Square Foot!

Apr 12, 2022

Chicago built a Library last year and it cost them a whopping $1,377.78 per square foot to build according to Public Libraries Data - A Year in Architecture 2021 printed in the Library Journal.  When I read that little statistic, I nearly fell out of my chair!  Now to be fair, this is probably a pretty prominent Library obviously constructed in a large and well-known city.  The finishes are most likely over the top and the existing architectural structure is surely made of top-notch materials.  It would also be fair to note that MOST of the other Libraries on this list do NOT come in at that high of a price tag, but they are coming in much higher than I've seen in a long time.  You can check them out for yourself in the link below:

PUBLIC LIBRARIES CONSTRUCTION DATA (Library Journal)

This report may be a bit discouraging if you're even considering a new design or renovation.  Prices are increasing on a pretty consistent basis and materials are getting harder and harder to find.  I've got designers and architects alike regaling me with their latest tales of project hiccups and how they're having to find the most creative and cost-effective ways to create solutions everyone can be happy with.  It's pretty messy to say the least.

BUT, people are still building.  My design firm alone is inundated with work like never before.  And while everyone seems to have their own opinions as to why we keep moving forward at such a break-neck speed, even in a time of such chaos, some reason that people are concerned the prices are going to continue to increase and are therefore trying to get their projects hammered out as quickly as they can before it costs them more.

I personally am not very sure.  Trying to discern what's really going on with the construction and design industry right now is like trying to hit a moving target.  What I DO know, however, is that this is definitely the time to watch your pennies and learn to design more efficiently.

And that's something I CAN help you with!  Next Monday is the start of my Off the Shelf Library Design Academy program.   As a licensed commercial Interior Designer, I have created a very unique program that teaches Library professionals like you how to not only save a tremendous amount of money by designing your own Library, but at a fraction of the cost for materials.  The finishes and concept boards I have hand-selected for you are filled with cost-effective options that will save you a ton of money.

All you have to do is be willing to put in the work, while I teach you step-by-step exactly how I design a commercial Library from start to finish.  By the end of the 6-Week course, you'll be able to:

  • Work with your color board of choice and finishes spreadsheet to assign finishes to your building
  • Plan your furniture layouts like a pro throughout your entire Library or specific individual spaces
  • Assign furniture pieces to each item you've used in your furniture layout designs and work within your furniture spreadsheet
  • select the final finishes you need for your furniture
  • work with a professional furniture dealer to get your furniture ordered
  • select artwork and signage for your entire Library
  • Work with the professionals to get your design completed and looking amazing
  • Create the Library that works best for you on your own terms and at your own pace
