DIY Library Design - Why it Works!

Aug 03, 2021

I've spent the last year putting together a solid online design program for Library Directors and their staff to help them put together a Library design that works beautifully all while saving money in the process.  It's called Off the Shelf and so far I've launched my first full 6 week course to 8 different Libraries and some of their staff members.  We even plan to launch our next session some time this Fall.  And I would love for you to jump in and join us.  But for those of you who worry that you aren't capable of pulling off your own design, let me take a few minutes to ease your fears by showing you exactly how this program works and how capable you can be if you have the right tools and the right person teaching you how to do it.

WHAT'S IN THE OFF THE SHELF PROGRAM

The design program I've put together is packed full of very information-rich videos in the form of 4 different design modules.  I've broken down my full step-by-step design process into categories that are easy to understand so that you don't find yourself overwhelmed with the information coming at you all at once.  The first module covers the finishes.  I've put together multiple color finish boards for you to choose from, giving you the confidence you need in your color scheme.  All the materials are listed and specified in a spreadsheet and you can choose as many of them as you like until you settle on the right one for your Library.

The second module teaches you exactly how to apply those finishes to your spaces.  I break your Library down into 4 different areas and show you how I place my finishes so you will know how best to design the Library you're looking for.  The third module goes into furniture specifications and finishes for the furniture.  Every color board option has a coordinating furniture spreadsheet with all the fabrics and materials pre-selected to remove any guesswork for you.  However if you decide to make any changes once you're in the program, you can just work with your furniture dealer to look at your other options.  I even supply a list of my own favorite furniture dealers to get you started and I teach you in the design modules how to hire the right dealer for you and your team.

The final module covers signage and artwork and teaches you how to specify these finishing touches, but also how to work with your installers to get everything set up the way you need it.  There are plenty of downloads for this section as well as the other sections, that will show you how to set up your signage order and how to specify the finishes for them.

HOW DO I GET THE SUPPORT I NEED

Each of these modules is released one week at a time.  For the first session, I crunched this program into 4 weeks.  But in the future I plan to spread it out over a span of 6 weeks to give people more time to work through the video modules and get all your questions answered.  This happens in two ways.

The first way is the weekly Live Coaching Calls that I host for all students.  This allows you to get answers directly from me to all your design questions and also allows you to hear the other questions your peers may have for any additional questions you may not have yet considered.  Each of these sessions is recorded and sent out to all active students for that session once the coaching call is complete.

The second way is the Private Live Facebook group I've put together and you are invited to join as soon as you have signed up for the course.  This group gives you access to me between Live Coaching Calls in case you have immediate questions that need answers right away.
