One Last Ghost Story
Nov 01, 2021Halloween is officially over. Thanksgiving is right on the horizon. But in the spirit of topping off the spooky holiday right, I thought you might enjoy a local article on our haunted Library and Brenau University.
These two buildings are particularly special to me for several reasons. Both are in my home town and I have a LOT of childhood memories of both places. However, I have had the pleasure of attending the Brenau University for design school and then was granted the amazing opportunity to handle the full renovation for the Library.
You can read the article by Allyson Shields with Access North Georgia here. Gainesville's Ghosts Haunt Year Round
I'd like to also give a quick shout out to the author of the article. Allyson Shields is a sweetheart. She also attended Breanu University and is a fellow Phi Mu (which is how I met her).
Anyone who has attended Brenau University knows of our ghostly tale of Agnes. And there are plenty of people with tales of her hauntings. I never personally had the chance to encounter her while I was there but a very good friend of mine and fellow design student swears she saw her once.
Her story goes a little something like this:
One night, while working until the wee hours of the morning (3 am - no thank you), and all alone at that, she was putting the finishing touches on her design project. Which I feel sure was due the next day. There was no one else in the building as far as she knew and definitely no one on the second floor where she was diligently making up for her previous procrastination stint. After some time had passed, she felt a strange sensation so she looked at the door to the studio she was working in. And a lady was standing there watching her. She looked away briefly not expecting anyone to have been there and then immediately and instinctively looked back. But the woman was gone. Naturally she was unsettled enough to wrap up her work and get out of there.
Gainesville's Ghosts Haunt Year Round
That's just one of many tales that have been told over the years. The former facilities manager once allowed me the chance to see the old dorm room of the former Agnes and told me a few stories as well. Some included new students witnessing her ghost hanging from the ceiling where she'd allegedly taken her own life following a love-affair gone bad in the 1920's. If you haven't heard the story, you should look it up!
But for the really great stories, you need only pay a visit to either facility and ask them about their ghosts. Those stories are prevalent and continue to make their way through time from person to person. I mean, who doesn't love a good ghost story?!
If you're someone who does, you may enjoy this article. I hope everyone had a wonderfully spooky Halloween!
